001 [Video | Action for Route 29]

[The feed opens up to Riza, but the view is unsteady. She’s frowning at the devise, unaware that she’s broadcasting. The technology she’s used to isn’t exactly up to par with the kind she has to deal with now. A Pidgey can be seen on her shoulder, though the view quickly changes to show the ground. Riza’s walking somewhere.]

I guess there’s no point in trying to call anyone. Not if everyone’s like the rest of the people in that town.

[She huffs in frustration and continues walking. The Pidgey chirps a bit, but for a while, everything’s pretty uneventful. At least, until Riza comes to a large clump of tall grass. She sudden;y stops as she meets up with a mean little Rattata. She tries to walk around it, but it keeps stepping in front of her. She reaches to where she would normally keep a pistol on her, but grabs nothing. That’s right, they’re gone…]

Do you want to get hurt?

[Riza tries to step over it, but the purple rat just jumps up and grabs on to her leg and sinks its teeth into her leg. Riza cries out and reaches down to grab its tail to throw it off of her. Meanwhile, her Pidgey flies off her shoulder and confronts the Rattata.]

Damnit! [Riza had read the pamphlets, but the whole thing seemed more than a little cruel to her. Still, her bird seemed ready to fight that thing of its own free will…

Riza brings the Pokégear back up, still unaware of the recording as she tries to find that thing where it listed names of attacks.]

Use Sand-attack!

[The Pidgey obeys, though it can’t be seen on the screen. It’s focused on Riza’s face, though everything can still be heard.]

Now tackle it. Good job!

[It isn’t long until Riza lets out an exasperated sigh and the Pidgey returns triumphant. As Riza takes a seat, she sets the Pokégear on the ground where it shows Riza’s bleeding leg. She digs in her bag to find an extra shirt which she rips to bandage herself up. The Pidgey is on the ground next to her looking a little concerned.]

Don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine.

[She strokes the Pidgy’s head and it nuzzles her back.]

You’ll be needing a name, won’t you? How about Kittyhawk?

[A happy chirp. The Pidgey’s just happy that she’s getting a name.]

Kittyhawk it is then.

[Riza’s able to get up and she picks up the Pokégear, now realizing that a little light is on. Kittyhawk returns to her perch on Riza’s shoulder.]

What’s this-

[The feed cuts as Riza hits a button.]

[Lee looks faintly amused.]

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The town that the Wright brothers chose as the base for testing the first controlled powered airplane back in 1903. I almost named my starter Orville - after one of the Wrights.

...I'm gonna guess the reference wasn't intentional, though.

[Not everyone is a history nerd like you, Lee. And not everyone is from America, either.]

United States of America.

[Her uniform seems somewhat modern - modern enough that she would've heard of airplanes if she was from Earth.]

You?

Yeah, they pretty much are. [Or, well, they used to be, but let's not complicate things.] And, uh, it's fine to just go with U.S. for short.

I've never heard of Amestris. What's it like there?

[Lee listens with interest because oohhhh history and places he's never heard of YOU'VE PIQUED HIS CURIOSITY, MA'AM.]

As in the country is governed by the military? [Sounds like old Europe.] Any attacks from neighboring countries, or is it pretty much mostly internal?

[He smiles disarmingly, with a self-depreciating laugh.] Sorry for the third degree - I'm a history teacher back home by trade, my curiosity gets the better of me sometimes. You don't have to answer if you don't want.

The U.S. is a democratic country, originally made up of a union between newly-independent colonies, which each still have their own set of laws, although the Federal government controls things like currency and interstate travel. It's more militaristic than most would care to admit - we had our own Civil War, but that was almost 150 years ago, now.

[Well good, at least he's not offending her. And for what it's worth, he's still listening with rapt attention because he's secretly a huge nerd at heart.

The part about the people who want to see Amestris become a democracy is particularly interesting to him, and even with all of the political problems in the U.S. he can't stand to burst her bubble.]

Well, the U.S's founding fathers laid the foundations for a democracy that's survived for going on 250 years from a group of ragtag colonies who were sick of being dominated by England, so I'd say with the right people in charge that reform you want isn't impossible.

I'm Lee, by the way. Nice to meet you.
