As in the country is governed by the military? [Sounds like old Europe.] Any attacks from neighboring countries, or is it pretty much mostly internal?

[He smiles disarmingly, with a self-depreciating laugh.] Sorry for the third degree - I'm a history teacher back home by trade, my curiosity gets the better of me sometimes. You don't have to answer if you don't want.

The U.S. is a democratic country, originally made up of a union between newly-independent colonies, which each still have their own set of laws, although the Federal government controls things like currency and interstate travel. It's more militaristic than most would care to admit - we had our own Civil War, but that was almost 150 years ago, now.
